About me
My name is Emma and I'm currently a researcher in the Statistical Cybermetrics Research Group at the University of Wolverhampton. My background is in art and information science, and from this I have developed a strong research interest in visual communication and the creation and dissemination of digital images. I am particularly interested in the changing role of photography within society and in the growth of user generated content such as digital images on social networking sites.I studied Art at college, and went on to complete my first degree in Publishing at Loughborough University. I am now currently studying for a PhD at Wolverhampton University, which looks at image tagging on Flickr. I want to compare people's motivations for tagging images with their actual tagging practices, in order to shed more light on the emerging tagging phenomenon.
My other research interests include: traditional image indexing/classification; image retrieval; tagging; folksonomy; visual culture; photography; and the aesthetics and philosophy of art, and I have also been a reviewer for the Social Networking in Cyberspace conference (held in Wolverhampton, UK, in April, 2010).
