Image Research

About me

My name is Emma and I'm currently a researcher in the Statistical Cybermetrics Research Group at the University of Wolverhampton. My background is in art and information science, and from this I have developed a strong research interest in visual communication and the creation and dissemination of digital images. I am particularly interested in the changing role of photography within society and in the growth of user generated content such as digital images on social networking sites.

I studied Art at college, and went on to complete my first degree in Publishing at Loughborough University. I am now currently studying for a PhD at Wolverhampton University, which looks at image tagging on Flickr. I want to compare people's motivations for tagging images with their actual tagging practices, in order to shed more light on the emerging tagging phenomenon.

My other research interests include: traditional image indexing/classification; image retrieval; tagging; folksonomy; visual culture; photography; and the aesthetics and philosophy of art, and I have also been a reviewer for the Social Networking in Cyberspace conference (held in Wolverhampton, UK, in April, 2010).
